Accounting: The Language of Business
Welcome to Want2bCPA.org, the student Web site of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants. Want to know more about the exciting world of accounting and what it means to be a certified public accountant (CPA)? This site will give you the goods. It contains a collection of information that could help you decide to choose accounting as your career.
If your idea of certified public accountants involves sitting in a back room with ledgers and spreadsheets, think again. CPAs are CEOs, COOs, CFOs, internal auditors, mayors of cities, tax professionals, college professors, state auditors, business owners, shareholders, entrepreneurs, and FBI agents. They are management consultants, information technology gurus, and investment and financial planning experts.
They evaluate businesses, serve as expert witnesses, uncover fraud, and teach. They work in and with Fortune 500 companies, Mom-and-Pop businesses, nonprofits, government, and schools. They are certified public accountants. In every segment of business, government, and education, CPAs are an important ingredient for success.
In a business, hiring a CPA adds a resource with in-depth knowledge of business management. A CPA helps write business plans; evaluate the worth of an organization; secure financing; assess benefits and compensation plans; accumulate, analyze, and report on financial and operational information; develop personal financial and long-term investment plans; represent companies before the Internal Revenue Service; and much, much more.
As a student, if you’re considering business, finance, or economics as a career choice think about this: Accounting provides a solid base for understanding how business works. By choosing accounting, you prepare yourself to work with a wide variety of businesses and industries such as agribusiness, real estate, telecommunications, healthcare, entertainment, oil and gas, construction, and more. As a CPA there’s a place for you in government and institutions of higher learning.
The CPA profession enables many to create the working environment of their dreams because they know and can speak the language of business: Accounting.
